It may well be beneficial to pay your partner or spouse a salary if you run your own company. There are a couple of scenario's where it would be beneficial to pay your partner:
- When they are not paid elsewhere, or they are not paid their full tax free personal allowance each year.
- Your own level of income is within the 40% tax bracket.
In order to pay your partner you will need to set them up on a payroll, pay them the recommended amount each month and submit RTI submissions to HMRC.
Please be aware that your partner should be actively involved in working within the company to enable a wage to be paid out. Involvement could include bookkeeping, credit control or office management.
